Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a leading research organization in Africa, with strong track records in developing, testing and validating innovations for health. The institute’s work spans across a wide spectrum of sciences including biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, monitoring and evaluation and policy translation. IHI has a history of more than 50 years. It is an independent non-profit organization registered in Tanzania.

The beginning: A visit to Ifakara by zoologist Dr. Rudolf Geigy from Switzerland in 1949 marked the beginning of over 50-year history of IHI. Geigy [1920-1995], a scientist from the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel, sought a fieldwork location for researching on tropical diseases. Eight years later, he opened the Swiss Tropical Institute Field Laboratory (STIFL) there.

The name “Ifakara” refers to “a place you go to die”, a reflection of the historically high burden of disease in the area, before major control efforts started.

Transformation: In the years after the 1961 independence, STIFL played a central role in training medical officers who could serve the country after independence. The government mandated STIFL to play the role through the Rural Aid Centre, which was designed to undertake the assignment.

2 Field Interviewer/Clinical Observer

Qualification and Experience 

• Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Clinical Medicine. 

• Minimum of 2 years of working experience; experience in treating children is mandatory. 

• Received IMCI training. 

Skills and Competencies 

• Good clinical understanding of IMCI and child health. 

• Ability to communicate fluently in both English and Kiswahili languages. 

• Familiar with the usage of electronic devices, like tablets or smartphones. 

• Willingness to travel by public transport. 

• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team. 

• Committed to work and adherence to work regulations. 

• Can maintain confidentiality in all aspects. 

• In-depth knowledge about the local setting (Morogoro); living/coming from a village in the health facility’s catchment area is an added advantage.

2 Field Interviewer

Qualification and Experience 

• A minimum of Form 4 level of education. 

• Any certificate in Health and Social Sciences will be an added advantage. 

• Experience in conducting population health surveys. 

• Previous experience working as an interviewer in health research projects.

Data Officer

Qualification and Experience 

• Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following quantitative fields: Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Mathematics. 

• At least 2 years of experience with data systems, programming, and analytic experience (experience in the health sector with health information systems would be an asset).

Skills and Competencies 

• Knowledge and interest in IT and computer systems, and software development. 

• Knowledge of SQL language (querying and manipulating), a good understanding of relational databases, ODK, etc. 

• Skills/knowledge of one or more programming languages such as R, STATA or Python. 

• Ability to manage data, including quality-checking, cleaning, anonymizing, dispatching, and backing up.

Research Officer

Qualification and Experience 

• Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Clinical Chemistry or other related fields. 

• At least 1 year of extensive working experience.

• Previous experience or familiarity with immunological assays such as ELISA, ELISPOT, ICS, PBMC isolation, and serum/plasma separation. 

• Registered and allowed to practice as a Laboratory Technologist
