Org. Setting and Reporting
The Chambers Legal Support Section ("Chambers") of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals ("Mechanism") invites applications for several legal internships commencing 01 January 2023 in The Hague, The Netherlands. This job opening will be valid for three months and candidates will be selected on a rolling basis. The duration of the internship generally ranges from three months to six months. The Mechanism is mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ("ICTR") and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ("ICTY"). In carrying out these essential functions the Mechanism maintains the legacies of these two pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts and strives to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. Chambers provides administrative and legal support to the Judges of the Mechanism in the execution of their judicial work.

Responsibilities
In Chambers, interns have the opportunity to support the judicial work of the Single Judges and the trial and Appeals Chambers. Chambers interns may engage in legal research in international criminal law and procedure, provide support on legal and factual issues at all stages of proceedings, and assist in the preparation of judicial documents. Interns may also perform routine tasks such as compiling and collating materials, and other duties as required.

Education
Candidates are required to either be: (i) law students who are enrolled in a graduate programme or in the final academic year of their first university degree; or (ii) law graduates. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.

Previous legal experience is desirable.

The internship is located in the External Relations Office in the Mechanism’s Registry in Arusha, reporting to the Public Information Assistant. Applications for internships starting in Arusha, Tanzania, will be valid for 12 months and candidates will be selected on a rolling basis. The Mechanism is mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (“ICTY”). The IRMCT has two branches one located in The Hague, The Netherlands and another in Arusha, Tanzania.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing a daily news summary circulated by local mass media (radio and TV, newspapers, press conferences, and interviews), regional press (newspapers, radio and TV, online interviews, etc.). International (Radio and TV, interviews, newspapers, etc);
  • Assist in public relations and protocol services;
  • Assist in library activities such as locating online journal articles, responding to reference queries and carrying out circulation tasks.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of Mechanism’s public relations activities, including drafting social media messaging and researching archival material for supporting visuals and outreach related to court activity;
  • Assist in responding to complex information requests and inquiries;
  • Assist in preparations for official visits;
  • Researches, compiles and presents basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Public Information Assistant.

Education
  • Candidates for internships in the External Relations section are required to be enrolled in, or have completed in the last 12 months, a relevant diploma/degree programme in communications, journalism, multimedia studies or similar. Knowledge of major social media platforms is required. Knowledge of photography and/or audio-visual production is an asset. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Candidates who could not apply earlier due to family responsibilities such as childcare, care for an elderly or sick family member, their own illness or who are attempting a career change or are re-entering the workforce will also be considered.
